View Full Version : Question baby trend flex loc outgrow by height?

I know the height given in the manual is a guideline and the best way to tell if a baby has outgrown an infant seat is by having less than 1 inch of plastic shell above the top of their head, but what about with me flex loc that has an adjustable harness where the "headrest" moves up as well? Do I go by the outer main shell or the plastic on the headrest, the headrest plastic goes up an inch above the outer shell plastic. (I hope that makes sense)
Thanks!

I don't see the 1" rule stated in the manual (http://www.babytrend.com/download/2008030711506200Flexloc_0307.pdf), but it's still a good idea to follow it. Both the fixed back and the adjustable back have the same overall height limit, which suggests to me that the adjustable back doesn't add any additional growing room. I would judge by the actuall shell.

That's what I was afraid of, the headrest going higher than the shell is decieving! DS is only 3 months but 90% for height and already getting close to outgrowing. I'm not ready for him to be in the MA yet :(

That is frustrating. I would call Baby Trend and ask them to clarify.
I think it's time to update your signature. ;)

My son is super tall too (95th+ percentile in height since birth) he went to an MA at 4 months.

Oh he's still got lots of room to rear face even at 18 months :D

Yeah, I am worried about losing the added protection the infant seat provides in general, plus the ease of carrying in the bucket, I can sling him, but sometimes the bucket has it's advantages, especially when baby can't sit on their own.
My oldest son was able to RF until 2 1/2 and he was always on the taller end of the scale too!

An infant seat isn't any safer then a convertible if the child fits properly into the convertible. It's only convenience, lots of moms don't ever use an infant seat and use some convertibles right from newborn.

Hmmm, I thought I read somewhere that every step up in a car seat (from infant seat to convertable to booster) is a step down in safety? Unless they meant a convertable forward facing only?

Yeah that's not the same.
A step down would be from rear facing to forward facing, from forward facing 5 point to booster, from booster to seatbelt.
So a rear facing convertible is the same as an infant seat :D

Well, just got off the phone with Baby Trend and she said it's 1" from the top of the head of the adjustable back, not the outer shell.

Actually, that seems to make sense, looking at the pictures. It's different than some of the other adjustable headrests, yk? It looks even better protected than the shell, and doesn't seem to rely on the shell for support. It's more of a shell-within-a-shell.
Considering how often companies give out conflicting advice, though, it's always good to double-check. :D

I also have the baby trend flex loc, and I was reading the instructions, and it says the height limit is 28 1/2 inches. Well my DD is 27 34 inches, and the harness adjusters (the part that moves up and down.) is still at the second click up. So I could adjust it up a couple of more clicks, so would I go by the height limit of 28 1/2", or should I go be her head being at the top of the seat?

Head 1" from the top. My youngest DD fit in her Latch-loc until she was over 30" as she's rather short torsoed for her height. HTH!
