I was just poking through the pics I have in photobucket and came across my dd who was born weighing 3lbs 8oz. This is her weighing 3lbs 10oz doing her car seat challenge test in the NICU a few hrs before discharge. We had to bring her home in an Evenflo Embrace b/c of the super low 5" bottom slots, and rear adjust harness that allowed for super small adjustment. Anyway, I just thought I'd post it if anyone wanted to see. :)

By the way, she just turned 2 the other day, and now weighs 25lbs.

Wow, she was so itty bitty :)

What hospital was she at? I never thought to take a pic of ds when they did the carseat study. He wasn't released for another 3 days after that though IIRC.

Oh.my.goodness! I would be so scared to handle a baby that little and I am very comfortable with newborns. Wow! The car seat did fit her pretty well, though.

She was born at the Royal Alex Trudy. She spent 10 days in the NICU. Otherwise completely healthy, just a severe case of IUGR (stopped growing at 29wks, delivered at 35wks).

Awwww! I had a preemie too (my second son) - not terribly early but early enough (34 weeks).
I remember NICU and the car seat challenge too.
He was born at a good size though, 5 lb 4oz (on his way to be about big brothers' weight at 8 lb),and a good length too, at 20 inches (told ya I had tall babies...:) ) When he was released from NICU, he was 5 lb even (and it was a bit of a struggle, he didn't like the gavage tube feedings, and I couldn't be there round the clock to nurse him...so it was hard to get him to gain. Once I got him home, no problem....at least for the first few months...after that he's been my skinny little man!!)

And my little guy is now 2 years, 3 months and also 25 lb :)

How long did your little one stay in NICU? Alex was there for two weeks.

I'll see if I can find a pic of my little guy in his car seat, too

Oh, and this was his first day home, too. I think it was the same day (or after?) as the challenge.

Deb,

That Snugride he came home in has a front harness adjuster right? And you were able to get it snug over him weighing 5lbs, is that correct? I admit to not actually trying Sophie in her front harness adjust Snugride when she was 3lbs. I sort of just assumed it wouldn't adjust small enough and sent dh to the mall across from the hospital to get "any Evenflo infant seat they have -- even if it means buying a stroller too!" (he of course panicked and terrified of buying the wrong thing lol, but did manage to snag a stand alone Evenflo bucket).

Now as for the 3hr trip home, it ended up taking 7hrs because we had to take Sophie out of her seat every (IIRC) 25 mins or so. I had to jossle her around a bit, offer the breast, make sure she wasn't too hot/cold, etc. She just barely passed her challenge test to be honest, but they were so utterly desparate for her bed. It was almost like they picked the least worst baby and sent him/her home. She was Way Too Small to ride in Any car seat. And she had only gained 2oz post birth. Now with all of that said I was SO GRATEFUL to take her home, I just packed her up and we were G.O.N.E faster than you could blink. Any NICU mom knows exactly what I'm talking about here. ;)

Wow, that's scary. But yeah, I know exactly what you're talking about. There was a little boy in the bed next to Jonas who was born @ 35wks and he weighed just a little smaller than your dd. Unfortunately, he went from complete stability and just being a feeder/grower, to having decels and desats when they started putting human milk fortifier in his feeds. :(

Ds stayed 15 days. He was just a hair over 5lbs at birth, and came home weighing 5lbs 4ozs. He fit his front adjust snugride really well, but for being 19" he had a long torso right from the get go. This was him coming home - not nearly so itty bitty as your dd, but I still love sharing his coming home pic. :o

Yep, the snug did have the adjuster and was able to get him snug in there.

I do indeed know what you mean about wanting to get them home. It was easily the LONGEST two weeks of my life. I cried when he wasn't rooming in with me, and then again when we left the hospital without him :( But, anytime I was feeling sorry for myself, I just thought of the really tiny preemies in the incubators with all the machines hooked up, and it reminded me of how blessed we really were.

My guy did REALLY well the whole time, no trouble with body temp, or breathing (He ripped the CPAP off after the first two hours...LOL :p)

He did have jaundice and he had to learn suck/swallow/breathe technique.

When he was released, I was told to increase his feedings only one or two a day (MAX) to breastfeeding from bottles, and that it would take about 2-3 weeks for him to be breastfeeding exclusively. Apparently Alex had other ideas - he was nursing all his feeds within 3 days!

The nurses were impressed ;)

He still is like that though - knows just what he wants and doesn't want, and nobody's telling him otherwise!:D

Emma was 5lbs 9oz at birth (full term, again IUGR, but not nearly as bad). She fit in the Combi bucket similar to how Jonas fit in his SR. Although she had such a short torso her shoulders were just under the 6" bottom slots.

I don't have a pic of Sophie in her SR on this computer. But I remember the first day she actually rode in it.. she had just hit the 5lb mark and fit perfectly.

Anyway, it's really neat seeing other small babies in their seats. So cute, and it's amazing to see/read their ages and sizes now... all doing to great!

She was sooooooo tiny! That chest clip is like a body shield or something on her lol.
