We were shopping tonight and as I was walking noticed they have carseats again. I was shocked considering how long it's been since they carried baby gear...

Anyways, took a gander and they're selling cosco Arriva 3pt seats with a 2006 DOM. And what's worse than that, is they're selling them for $80 - that's the same price as a 5pt evenflo carrier at wal-mart. So how many parents are going to buy this crappy 3pt arriva that won't fit their baby properly when they could've bought a 5pt seat for the same price.

The rest of the seats were pretty standard fare - AO, comfortsport - they did have a front adjust graco cargo that didn't have the memory foam, some boosters and an evenflo chase. Those ones all had DOM's in the last 6mos. For infant seats they also had an evenflo seat, a back adjust snugride and a front adjust snugride with a cold weather boot.

I was really disappointed to see that Arriva though. I never thought to check the back of it to see if it's one of the newer style adjusters like Graco & the designer 22 use, or if it's a butterfly style where the strap has to be doubled back in order to lock the harness length in place. I hope to goodness that it's a newer style one, parents so rarely remember to double back the harness...

(Prices weren't very competitive really for any of the seats, and I suspect they'll end up with some really old DOM kicking around again. If they were going to carry seats again they should've done a little better at selection and pricing IMO.)

Wow, $80 for a 3 point Arriva?! That's horrible.

And a DOM of '06... how odd. Since you work retail now do you know much about how this works? Like how SS would come across such outdated products? Would it just be a surplus that Dorel had and wanted to get rid of? Would it be that SS tucked them away while they got their Joe line going? I guess I'm sort of confused how such old seats would be reappearing now.

And for that matter, is Dorel still making the 3 point Arriva? I haven't seen any on our shelves (wal-mart) for a while now, though for years it was a constant seller (like they'd get a bunch in and they'd all get sold, much to my dismay).

Anyway, are they carrying any other gear? Strollers? Playpens? etc.

I suspect that the 06 Arriva's are stock from when they did carry baby gear. In fact I expected to find the rest of the seats with old DOM after seeing how old the Arriva was.

Dh works for Costco and I think how it works there is similar to how it works at most large retail chain stores. The buyers determine what products a store is going to carry, then they negotiate with manufacturers about a price. The often times corporate send automatic shipments to the stores and the stores restructure as directed. Very little happens on a local level when it comes to large retail stores unless there's a specific product they're having troubles keeping in stock - even then, what's shipped is often based on store volume.

They had a safety 1st jogging stroller, and a travel system. They had some exersaucers, jolly jumpers, the portable high chairs, baby monitors... so basically they have a mini baby department again. :shrug-shoulders: Maybe they were just waiting for the Joe thing to settle before bringing it back, I have no clue...

The carseat pictorial was last updated in 2007, and the Arriva 3pt was still being made then. So I suspect it is still being made, but the old stock came from somewhere. The AO had a DOM of Dec 07, which is relatively old when thinking about what the DOM on AO's & EB's are when they arrive at other stores- wal-mart's are often less than 2mos old when they hit the shelf, so dorel is shipping new seats in those cases...

Maybe Superstore bought some overstock from somewhere? I really don't know, but I was sure disappointed to see a 3pt. It's the first I've seen one available for purchase locally for well over a year. To think that some poor parent is going to spend as much on that as on a 5pt carrier with a new DOM at wal-mart just really irks me.

I agree. It's almost to the point of being unfair for parents.

$80 is such an inflated price.

Now in the first line of your last post (why can't I figure out the quote button?) you said Touriva. Is that a typo or do they actually have Touriva's as well with dom's of '06? (did they still make the Touriva in '06?)

The info about how stock and shippments, etc is very interesting to me. It's something I always wonder about. Esp with the big box stores.

Now on another unrelated note, I  the Joe line. Superstore has me totally sold on it for myself and the girls. It's very gap/oldnavy to me, but w/o the prices. I think that Soph's entire summer wardrobe is Joe this year. And I'm diggin' these black yoga style capris that I scooped for $12. Can't wait to move back to civilization so I can shop at Superstore instead of our crappy itty bitty wal-mart. :D

Oops, yep, it was a typo. :o Arriva, Touriva, they're said similarly.

To quote just click the quote button on the bottom right hand corner of any post. The "+" button allows you to multi-quote, so you can select however many posts you want to quote, then click reply and all those that you selected will appear quoted.

Or you could copy & paste the applicable line, and use the [quote] bb code. It'll show it as a quote, just won't link to the initial post with the blue arrow and say "xyz" said.

This is OT, but, speaking of Tourivas...
We just found out that's what the grandparents bought last year.
They've only taken Joseph out in it once.
I'm trying to find info out on it (recalls etc).

Anyone know much about Tourivas? It IS in fact, an '06 model.

I can't find it on any recalls so far, but they also can't find the reg. card says MIL.... So far nothing I can find on the internet. I guess though, I could register it myself, since I have the model # etc....

Actually her response when I asked dh to ask her what it was on the phone was "Uhhh, it's brown".

ANd tonight she claimed that car seats are a "Money making racket"

Okay, SOME probably are, but sheeeesh.
She then said "We never had car seats back when our kids were young, and we never heard of any kids being killed in accidents".

I said "You got lucky."
Hubby's uncle totally backed me up

Actually I make her sound awful, she's not really, she can just be really really opinionated, BUT, she can usually be educated after a good exposure to enough facts, I've discovered. So I guess I just have to keep "educating" her about car seat safety (we had this type of issue with breast feeding, too, because she hadn't, she didn't really believe in it, but she's actually changed her opinion on it after 4 years and two grandkids later, so there's hope yet ;) ). I'd actually really like to have a conversation with FIL about car seats and safety too, but they couldn't stay long tonight, so...

Another subject to tackle at a date not too far in the future. :)

And...I just finished reading about the whole "notch" in the side of Tourivas up to 2005...makes me ill.
Probably NOT there as it's a 2006, but nice work, Dorel.

Would you ladies feel comfortable having your kid ride in the grandparents car in a 2006 TOuriva? I don't think I do, which means, if they want to take my younger one out (I'm sure my big guy won't fit in it) they take OUR True Fit or get something else.

They'll probably think I'm nuts, or making a big deal out of nothing, but I can handle that. I can't handle the thought of my boy in that seat, though.

Anyways, I don't think it'll be the first time they think I'm making a mountain out of a molehill :p

Yep, as long as it's not recalled there's nothing wrong with it. The Touriva, Regal Ride, and Scenera are pretty much the same. It's a budget seat, not plush like others or well padded, but it meets standards. We routinely recommend parents get a Scenera if they're looking for an inexpensive seat.

It obviously comes down to a comfort level thing, but there's nothing particularly unsafe about using the Touriva provided it installs well and fits well.

eta: I'm not aware of any recalls on Touriva's made back in 2006. It's still always a good idea to visually inspect the seat for the condition of the harness and any worn or missing parts on a semi-regular basis. This applies for all seats though, regardless of brand.

It does not surprise me that Superstore is selling outdated crap....I am disappointed, but not surprised.

Okay, thanks...
I guess then I'll just double check to make sure there are no recalls (as I said, I'll register it for them myself).

I think I'm rather paranoid now about car seats.

OH - and as for Superstore, I'm not surprised either.
Good to know though, I just wish there was a way that more parents could know this.
