View Full Version : Question Mother-in-law bought this seat...should I be worried? ;)

Could someone please tell me if this is a good seat or not? My mother in law bought it in Costco and plans to install it in her car to drive my daughter. I'm a little nervous of having her driving around with my precious cargo and want to make sure this seat will serve us well.

Thanks in advance for any feedback that anyone can provide...

Cosco: model number 22123C-MDR - Scenera

Actually, on the cheaper end of the spectrum that is probably the seat that is the most recommended on here. It doesn't have any of the frills like the other seats. Safety wise, it's perfectly fine. All seats have to meet the same requirements. If your MIL can install and use it correctly everytime, then no worries.

The Scenera is a great seat in Grandma's car! It's got a nice tall back to allow RF to the limits. It lasts most "average" kids to around 3 or so.

How old and big is your daughter?

Thanks for the quick feedback! I was just coming back to edit to add my daughters 'stats' :o Can see how that would be helpful!
Sara is just past 2years old, weighs approx. 24 lbs and is approx 33 inches. (Dr. appt Tuesday so will know true weight/height then.)

If you happen to know...what are the weight/height restrictions? She is currently in an Eddie Bauer 3-in-1, FF due to the 22lb/32inch restriction for RF.

I plan to install it myself when I see her tomorrow (feel like I'm the only one 'careful' and concerned enough to really do it right). :)

Thanks again!

Actually, the limits you mentioned are the MINIMUMS for forward facing. Your daughter can rear face in either of the seats you have available until she weighs 35 lbs or has less than an inch of seat shell above her head.

We would strongly recommend turning her back rear facing. She's be a LOT safer that way. My own daughter was RF until 2 years and 6 months when she hit the weight limit on her seat.

The Eddie Bauer 3 in 1 RF to 35 pounds. As long as her head is 1 inch below the shell of the seat she can still be RF. The Scenera also is good for RF to the 35 pound limit. The Scenera will actually last her longer than the Eddie Bauer 3 in 1. The 3 in 1s are outgrown early because of the low top harness slots. Your LO is still a peanut. She would be much, much safer RF.

Since you posted in the Canadian forum, I'm going to assume you are in Canada. You can rearface her until 30 pounds in both seats as long as there is one inch of shell above her head. They forward face to 40 pounds or when the shoulders are above the highest harness position.

Oops. I failed to recognize this was in the Canadian thread. The 35 limits are for the US seats. But, even at the 30 lb RF limits, she could RF for a while longer.

Depending on the age of the 3in1, it might have had a 22lb max rf'ing limit. All the newer ones have 30lb rf'ing limits though.

At your dd's height and weight, she should definitely still fit rf'ing in the seat provided she's not super long in the torso. While cosco lists the height limit as 32", provided there's 1" of hard shell above your dd's head, the seat still fits her by height. Granted it does mean using the seat above the stated height limit, but most of us feel 100% comfortable making the parental decision to do that since it's more about how the seat fits vs. what the numerical height of a child is.

Did you mean 35lbs limit? 22lbs limit seats have been gone for a looong time. ;)

There are 35, 30, and 22lb limit 3-in-1s in circulation today. It could be any of these.

Nope, I meant 22lbs. They haven't been available to buy new for a good long time, but they're not all expired yet.

I just think it's cool that Costco has Sceneras! :D

Wonder how much they are down to there? Our WM just 'rolled back' the price, I think it is $69.99 now, which is better, but nowhere near the US price.

They're $43 at my not-so-local Walmart, but I've seen them as low as $37.

Quassee/Nicole,

Are you saying that you found a CDN Scenera for under $50??

That's amazing!! The best I've ever seen at our wal-mart is $69.

And going back to the 22lb rf limit on 3-in-1's, I had no idea that these seats were in circ back when the 22lb rf limit was still typical. When exactly did the first 3-in-1 debut anyway? I know I bought one about 7yrs ago.. could it be that they've already been out for close to 10 yrs? If so, where does the time go, and HOW on earth in 10yrs has Dorel not been forced to fix the spooky top slot issue.

Anyway, to the OP, the Scenera is a good safe seat, basic and no-frills, but it works and works well when used and installed correctly (as with any seat).

Nope--I live 5 minutes from Washington State, so I shop at Walmart there... I don't dare step foot in a Walmart store in Surrey (anyone local will understand..)

Depending on the age of the 3 in 1 she could be RF until 35 pounds and 36 inches. I have an Eddie Bauer 3 in 1 that was made in 2003 and is RF to that limit. I have my 2.75 year old RFing in it, and she fits fine.
