I know I've seen this on here. but I can't find it.
Anyway -I have a 1997 Subaru Legacy - no LATCH or Tether (I don't think) -can either of these be retrofitted to the car?
This is our 'other' car and we will be installing 2 uptowns in it.

Thanks.

Tether anchors should be able to be installed. LATCH cannot be retrofitted.

Sedan or wagon? You can have tethers installed in both, but the part numbers are different.

Sedan.
Other question - we haven't actually installed the Uptown's yet - are they RF-tether?

No, the Uptown can't be top tethered rear facing.

The '97 Legacy sedan can have up to 3 top tether anchors retrofitted. There are three 8mm weld nuts in the rear filler panel/package shelf, and the Subaru part number is 96031AC000MU (dark gray) or 96031AC000RA (red gray) according to the LATCH manual. The part color apparently is intended to match or coordinate with the vehicle's interior. :) Subaru unfortunately doesn't have a free tether anchor retrofit program, and I don't see a MSRP listed for the retrofit anchor part in the LATCH manual. Maybe another Subie owner who has retrofitted their car could give you an idea of the cost.

You are my HERO!! Thanks. I guess if I don't need it for RF, I might not need it for a few years yet and we will likely have a new car before my 2 are 35lbs and FF.

In case you do end up needing them, I bought 2 - one for our 90 Legacy Sedan and one for our 94 Legacy Wagon. It was about $50 for both of them (I think one cost more and one less than $25 but don't remember which). I installed them myself with a socket wrench. They come with a plastic cover that matches the cars interior and are different shapes for the sedan and wagon. The plastic piece just seems cosmetic to me and probably add to the cost. After I saw them, I would have happily bought them without the cover if they were cheaper but don't think that was a option (Lacking the covers would be far from the biggest cosmetic blemish in 18 and 14 year old cars! lol)
The anchors themselves looked identical.
When I called to order them from the dealer they asked for my VIN # - I assume to get the color, year and body style.
