Our local Chevy dealership says there is a limit of 10yrs for installing a tether bolt. They want to charge hundreds of dollars... I called GM and they told me that they will install the first one free of charge. The company is giving us a hassle. Anyone heard of this? Do we need to attach the tether? It would only be for our second vehicle but I would feel safer with a tether... Does anyone know where to install one in a Chevy supercab if we do it ourselves?

Oops, I didn't see your post here before I replied to your similar post in an older thread at http://www.car-seat.org/showthread.php?t=18942 I don't know specifically where the tether anchor could be retrofitted in a Chevy Supercab truck and the LATCH manual doesn't indicate specific part numbers or locations for retrofittable GM models, unfortunately. All of those details are supposed to be handled through the dealership's service dept. which has current parts info. for retrofitting tether anchors. There should be no charge for retrofitting one tether anchor and I've not heard of a 10 year limit on doing so. It sounds like you need the dealership and GM corporate to get on the same page, or possibly find another Chevy dealership to assist you.

When my parents needed to get a tether installed in their Suburban, they were told they just got in under the 10-year rule. So yes, I've heard of it.

It's not true. My Suburban is fifteen years old and I had a tether anchor put in last year.

i've heard the 10 year rule, I have a 96 cavalier, they wanted to charge me $180+ for 2. I never talked to GM corprate though, I discovered the cavalier has predrilled holes, and went and did it myself (DH didn't even help me)

I don't know about your vehicle though, sorry

In 2005 we bought a 1992 Chevy truck. We went to a dealership, armed with the information about one free anchor for Chevy vehicles of that age. Dealership was clueless, and, for a while, told us it was impossible to get the parts, especially since the vehicle was a pickup truck. They had all sorts of worries about liability issues. With persistence (on our part), they finally figured out what the appropriate part was, ordered one kit, and gave it to us for free. We installed it ourselves (maybe this made them feel better about liability); the parts kit came with install instructions. We had to drill a hole in the back of the cab, but the instructions made it clear where to drill. A 10-year program limit was never mentioned, although our Chevy was well over 10 years old at the time. I wonder if the 10-year rule actually exists? I can't draw any definite conclusions from our experience, since the dealership seemed to know nothing whatsoever about this whole topic (i.e tethers for child restraints). I think my husband did call Chevy corporate also, and didn't hear anything about such a limit. However, I'm not positive, since we were simultaneously trying to get anchors for a Ford and a Toyota, and I don't remember exactly who was giving us which line of cr** :D, with all the phone calls we were making at the time. I'm sure, though, that no one we talked to ever said anything about time limitations on tether anchor refits....

No, the ten-year rule is a dealership's attemp to get out of installing te tether anchor.
