This is probably a silly question, but in trying to juggle car seat safety and environmental friendship, what about the bus? We just lost our second car.

I take the public transportation (bus & metro),
I just use the stroller.

Well, there are no seat belts on most public transport buses, so there's no way to use a carseat anyway. That said, public transportation is generally much safer than private vehicles are, so you needn't worry about taking your child on board.

Buses are larger and easily seen, their visibility helps them avoid accidents, and their size helps mitigates the effects when they are. Probably the drivers' professional training helps too.

DS and I rode the streetcar/subway/bus home tonight. He thought it was great. When he was little, I found it handy to have him in a carrier - it left my hands free to hold on if I was left standing.

HTH! :)
