Yes, you can remove it, it is just for extra support for a smaller child. I have the DC and we used the extra padded inserts till my DD was about 10 months old. It made her look squished and she seemed to be happier when I took them out.

DD is 16 months old and still rearfacing, I took it out and she looks much more cozy. thanks
