i think I may be getting a mazda 626 lx, that way I won't have to share my car anymore. it has no latch or top tethers. does anybody know their deal on retrofitting top tethers?

What year? Sedan or hatchback? We need those to know which part number you'll need.

There are three weld nuts for tether anchors in models after 1989. Kits range from $11-$35. Basically, you buy the kit, pop out the plastic cover and screw the anchor in.

Lower anchors cannot be retrofitted.

sorry, forgot that part-- its a 98 sedan model

I'm not too worried about LATCH, I usually use seatbelts. I hate when the cs is installed without tethers, so that's all I'm worried about.

They do not have a program to install for free. They do give part number though.
There are different number's for different years
626 Sedan 89-92 GJ30-57-77X for center and outboard
HB 90-92 GJ37-57-77X for center and outboard
Sedan 93-97 GA2K-57-77X for center and outboard
98-99 GD7A-57-77X for center and outboard

Notes:(3) weld nuts in rear filler panel for Sedans
(3) weld nuts in back panel for HB

the part number for a 98 sedan is GD7A-57-77X for all three positions. It may come with more than one length of bolt in the package because different lengths may be needed for outboard and center positions.

Mazda dealerships near me quoted insane prices for installation, so if it's a DIY job (most sedans I've dealt with are), I'd go that route.

could I just buy that kit from tru and do it myself? is that what you mean by it has 3 weld nuts in the back filler panel?

TRU will not sell the vehicle-specific parts you need, but you can usually find them through auto parts stores (I ordered the kit for my 1991 Honda Accord online for around $10 and installed it myself).

Your best bet would to be to call Mazda and have them get the part for you if you are not able to find it.

Have you bought the car yet? If not, are you buying from a dealer? When we were looking at used cars, we mentioned needing the anchors and every salesman said they could include retrofitting them as an extra as part of the deal. Something to think about...
