View Full Version : Installation in a 2001 Odyssey

We're travelling soon, and the vehicle at our destination will be the grandparents 2001 Odyssey. What (if any) installation issues should I expect? I'll be installing car seats in their vehicle at 2AM, so I don't want to make any nasty discoveries at that hour!

I've only ever done seatbelt installation, so I guess I'd just prefer to stick with that as I expect my brain to be a little foggy when I'm putting them in.

Here's the seats, and my idea for configuration:

Two rf seats in the outboard positions of the third row - a rf MA for the 2yo, and probably the snugride, but maybe another MA for the 4mo baby.

Two forward seats in the second row (I think it has captains chairs, but I was a bit confused because they've talked about scooting the seat over so it makes a bench??)

3yo ff MA in second row
4yo ff Fisher Price (the one like a MA) if I can squeeze him into it, otherwise probably a Nautilus.

Will these seats work in these positions? Okay with a seatbelt installation?

Thanks for any help!

It's one of the easiest cars to work with :). The seatbelts are switchable (pull all the way out slowly, let retract back in tightly). There's actually a huge Ody information page here (go to the google bar on the bottom, put in odyssey 2001 and search car-safety.org, Darren's got full pictures and many seats). The tether anchors on the bottoms of the captain's chairs are a pain to reach... bring a flashlight or just wait until the next morning to do that (the shoulderbelt lockoffs act like top tethers, it'll be fine). Yes, the passenger side captain's chair slides over to make a 'bench' that is really 'two chairs rightr next to each other'... I don't think that'll be easy at all if you have the two kids in the back, though, you'll want that aisle in the middle so you can walk back and buckle them both in. :twocents:.

I currently have my two oldest in back, two youngest in front. If the "center" seat is installed with LATCH, you have an aisle outboard for kids to get to the 3rd row. I did it that way so Nadia could help with Kira, but her arms are too short (the seats aren't as close together as they would be on a true bench). I'll probably move one of the other kids to the 2nd row soon (weather permitting), as it would be nice to have someone able to care for Kira when she cries.

Like Julie said, the installations should be easy. Just do the best you can at 2 am, and if you realize that it would be easier to switch two of the seats, you can do it the next day when it's light out. I think that any configuration will work for one trip, even if it is a bit harder than you'd like to get everyone buckled.
