View Full Version : Is this a good install?

We just had our second baby and I we got two new car seats: the Recaro Signo for our three year old and the Peg Pergo 30/30 for the baby. We want to keep the Peg Pergo installed in the center seat position so that a person can sit in the left position. I installed the Recaro with latch and the Peg Pergo with the seat belt. Everything is very tight, but the Peg Pergo is a bit askew because it is so close to the Recaro. The car is a 2001 X5.
The pictures below make it seem a bit more askew than it actually it, but you get the idea.
Is this considered a good and safe install? What could I do to even things out while keeping the Peg Pergo in the middle?

That is too much tilt, IMO. Try installing the Signo with the seatbelt, you should be able to shift it closer to the door by an inch or two, which will allow the infat seat to sit flat on the vehicle seat.

I agree with the PP. That is way to much of a tilt. Try both with a seatbelt install and see if that makes a difference. Lower anchors and seatbelts are equally safe for installs.

When installing side by side, you need to get each seat tight independent of the other- meaning still less than 1" of movement in any direction at the beltpath if the other seat is removed. I don't think the Peg install would be acceptable if you took out the Recaro.
The suggestion of using the seatbelt for both seats is a good one. You can move the Recaro closer to the door with the seatbelt than you can with the lower anchors. That will leave more room for the center seat. You can move it as far as necessary as long as the door doesn't hit it and you can still get it tight.
As far as the tilt goes, a little is okay. It's fine as long as the seat is truly sufficiently tight and the child is comfortable.
Lastly, I believe the handle has to be down in the vehicle with that infant seat. Keep that in mind as you're trying to puzzle them next to each other. That is, unless they've changed it for the 2008, 30/30- check your owner's manual. :)
edit: it must be down.
from pages 23 and 24 of the 30/30 manual (http://www.pegperego.com/pegcatalogue/juvenile/downloads/PrimoViaggioSIP-US_30_30_FIUS0701I61.pdf)-
Adjust the handle so it rests at the
top edge of the car seat as shown.
Any other position may injure your
baby in an accident.

I agree with everything that's already been said.
I also wanted to mention that it's actually safer for the FF child to be in the center. The rear-facing child will be the most protected already, so putting the FF child in the safest position (center) will offer him a little more protection.

Who is John Galt?
But seriously, right, you ideally want the rearfacing child in the side seat, the forward facing child in the middle seat if possible (rearfacing is so much safer than forward facing that you want the FF child to be more protected). And unless those little arrow indicators are saying something different from what they used to, then the handle must be down when driving.
Good luck!
(ps, I'm just assuming J. G. is not really your name, he's one of my favorite literary characters. If it IS your name, that's cool)

There was a John Galt that went to my high school I think.

I don't think the Peg install would be acceptable if you took out the Recaro. Both seats are independantly very tight. The Recaro has virtually no movement, and the Peg has about half an inch of movement (even if I take the Recaro out).
I do put the handle on the Peg down when driving.
I'll try both with the seatbelt and see how that works.
Thanks for all the tips!
