Whomever has a 48lb radian (as I do), will you likely use it to 65 lbs? Or are you going to go by the sticker and stop at 48lbs? My ds is only 30lbs so not near the limit either way. Just curious, that is all!
We will have to buy a second radian at some point, our next little guy is being born on March 31/08. So once he is out of his infant seat (or to the point that I don't want the convenience of carrying him in the seat), we will get another. By that time I am guessing the 48lb RNs will not be on the shelves anymore, so will get a 65lb one.

Thanks for answering!
Hope you all had a great Christmas!

Erin - there were replies on this thread the day it was posted, I'm thinking there must've been a database error and the replies got lost.

Did you get a chance to see the responses? I just wanted to make sure you didn't think your post had been ignored....

Long story short, no, I wouldn't use the seat beyond 48lbs. The seats won't have any further testing beyond 48lbs, so if there was a recall that might've been issued at 50lbs, we'll never know.

(This was the case with a MA recall issued in the US - it was for the tether hook possibly failing if kiddo weighed 50lbs or more. If my seat was sold in the US, it would've fallen into the recall - date of manufacture and the id # on the tether hook match. - model # didn't but that would be due to being a CDN seat. ;) That time period of seats in Canada is only approved to 48lbs, so none of our seats were recalled, although had they been approved to higher weights at the time, it's quite likely they would've been.)

Okay, on the same note....

Would you use your Radian or Marathon past 30lbs RFing? (ie. up to 33lbs)

We are fortunate to have a Marathon manufactured in August 2004 with a 33lb RFing limit, so I have switched seats and DS is riding in that seat now that my 32lb DD has been switched FFing.

I think if I had a very young and heavy toddler (less than 2 years) that was nearing 30lbs, I just wouldn't weigh him/her quite as often as I had been weighing DD as she was approaching the 33lb mark. ;)

DS's Radian has a 30lb RFing limit, and this annoys me, especially since there doesn't seem to be a real reason for it, other than the fact that we are in Canada. Does TC have a 30lb dummy that it uses for crash testing? I thought the RFing crash test dummy was 15kg. (Maybe I should take the tech course to better understand all of this?!?) Why would the seats be only rated to 30lbs?

Sorry this is a little off-topic...but it's along the same lines as the OP's question...

So would you use the Radian or Marathon to 33lbs RFing???

We did for a short while. :o DS was 30lbs (naked) at 9.5 months. He was in a Titan at that time, so we turned him FF. He quickly outgrew the Titan by height, and we replaced it with a Marathon, which he RF'ed in briefly (after I learned it was the same seat as the US one.) He was already 32lbs by that point (around 14 months,) so it was only for a matter of weeks that he was RF again. I'm just glad we've never had any accidents with him with him FF so young.

That's a parental decision issue.. You're not going to get a carseat technician to tell you that they believe that it's acceptable for you to use any carseat contrary to manufacturer's instructions.

To put the RF weight limit in perspective--when my oldest was born 12 years ago, infant seats went to 20lbs RF and convertible seats went to 22lbs RF...most people turned their babies at around 6 months. Even if 30lbs seems low compared to 33lbs, it's really quite high compared to the 22lbs that WAS the norm.

Had to jump in on this thread because I still am torn about this and really need to hear other thoughts. We bought a 48lb one just when the new limit was being discussed by TC. I couldn't wait as my DS was 45lbs and too big for most other seats on the market, and a BAD booster rider! SK promised to issue me a new sticker when the limit was raised, and said it would be retro to all their seats, so I was pretty confident that my DS would get full use of the seat. Of course, they weren't able to keep that promise, and I was stuck with the 48lb seat, and a DS who is still a BAD booster rider;). If I had a younger child to pass along the 48lb radian to, I would scoop up a new 65lb one in a minute, but I don't, and I just can't bring myself to be able to justify buying a new seat for the sticker...but the recall factor is worrying to me.

My personal decision is to keep using the Radian (since the alternative would be putting my DS into a booster) and keeping an eye on the recalls that come out. I know it might not be the best decision, but I still think DS is safer harnessed in the 48lb Radian than in a booster at this time) HTH and would still love to hear other thoughts on this one!

Thanks for responding everyone................I had actually thought that no one did. I guess as mentioned, a technical error or something? Nevertheless, I appreciate the responses.................
Our newest ds will be born on March 31/08 so will likely at some point get another radian, which will be the 65lb one. At that point, we will flip flop so the weight limits shouldn't be an issue...............
Have a great night

YW. :)

(I posted in the announcements/feedback forum to see if admin has any idea why the replies might've disappeared... I know hipmaman, quassee and myself had replied before, and a couple others I don't remember their names for 100% certainty. So nope, we didn't miss you... they just disappeared into the great wide open of the internet..lol.)

I really want to keep DS RF until he is at least two, but if he continues on his current growth curve (which has been really consistent so far) he will reach 30 lb at around 18 months, but not hit 33 lb until after he is two.

Maybe I will take your idea of weighing him less frequently, if he is still under 30 lb at his 18 month check-up. His next check-up would not be until 24 months and since I don't have a scale at home, how could I possibly know when he passes 30 lb . Of course at 24 months, when the proof is in writing, I would turn him FF.

It is especially tempting now that the Radian will have a 35 lb RF limit in the US - http://www.car-seat.org/showthread.php?t=31606
