Need cheap, safe car rec's.

DH is in desperate need of a new car. Right now he's spending $300-$350 a month on gas and it's killing us. I just realized we are spending $750/month on transportation. :eek:

I need something with good gas mileage, that's safe, and will fit 3 Sceneras (or 2 and a Radian). We'll buy it at auction, but I need to have ideas before we go. I'm thinking around a 1997-2000, in the $2500-$3000 private party range.

ford taurus, ford windstar, volvo S70/V70. volvo will be more than $3000, but not necessarily, especially at auction. those come to mind as safe cars for their age, and they should be able to fit your 3 seats.
