I would like to get statistics about infants in accidents in trucks. I am trying to convince my husband that our infant daughter is safer in the back seat of our car than in his pick up truck.
Thanks

Back seat of pick up or front? I'm not a tech, but if I remember correctly, statistics show that all kids under 12 are safer in the back & every passenger is about 40% more at risk of serious/fatal injury in the front compared to the back ... plus, generally speaking, trucks have a higher roll over risk. But, I think it can really depend upon the alternate vehicle as well - some small cars are not as safe as trucks. Maybe these links are helpful? http://www.suvsafety.info/carguide.html http://www.suvsafety.info/links.html

Trucks are very dangerous, They cut you off on highways, they don't pay attention to there surroundings, they need to be more careful. There are alot of things that a truck driver does. We need to watch our parent's backs because they are the ones who drive, unles your old enough to drive. I think in order to be a truck driver they need better skills and watching there surroundings.

Trucks may have an inherently higher roll over risk, which of course can be made higher by irresponsible driving. However, many parents who own trucks do use them to transport their family and drive in a safe and responsible manner. Those parents will weight the risks vs the situation they are in and make a decision whether to use the truck with an infant safely secured in an appropriate seat or not. While some people have a choice as to vehicles, others do not. EVERYONE has the responsibilty to drive safely.

I think this person is asking about the safety of her dd riding in a pick up trucks and not an 18 wheeler. Yes, A lot of big rig truck drivers do not pay close attention and usually when an accident occurs with one it usually a severe or deadly accident. But, Remember the accident may not have been the truck drivers fault at all. I see all the time vehicles cutting 18 wheelers off or riding in their blind sport (remember if you can see their mirror they can't see you. So, Yes if someone rides in an 18wheelers blind spot and they try to change lanes there could be an accident. Remember the sheer size and weight of big rigs make them hard to stop quickly. So, We as drivers need to be aware and know to put some distance between ourselves and 18 wheelers. Trust me they want that distance too.

As for the OP question. I need a little more info regarding is the truck a regular cab, extended cab, or a crew cab. What type of seat is she in? My dh has a crew cab pickup and both my girls have seats in his truck and have had seats in there from day one. I actually drove the truck full time for 2yrs and had my oldest in it rearfacing from 5wks old. Before that we had an extended cab truck. I have never questioned their safety in the vehicle. I made sure they had proper recline so if there was a lot of rebound they never got close to the rear window. I also placed their seats in the outboard position while in the infant carrier. This way a head rest was between them and the rear window. When they came out of the infant carrier I placed her back in the center in a Britax seat so I could rear face tether which will prevent rebound.

Do you mean storing in the bed when you need to transport more passengers? I would so this isn't the best idea one its exposed to the weather unless you have a bed cover. Plus it could get damaged from sliding round the bed of the truck from driving & turns. Also removing it and reinstalling it could lead to a mistake when installing it. So, Generally we say not to move the seats frequently if at all possible. This will cut down on installation errors/misue.

I had an extra seat with me one day (long story lol) when my MIL picked me and the boys up in her Dodge Ram. I put the extra seat in the bed, but I didn't want it sliding around, so I clipped the LATCH hooks and tether hook onto the cargo anchors in the bed. ;) Worked pretty good.
I wouldn't want to do that on a regular basis though b/c being out in the sun would probably fade the cover pretty quickly. I don't know if direct sunlight would be any harder on the plastic than the heat of a car in the summer, but that's another thing to think about.
