View Full Version : Radian 65 install problem

I've checked old posts first for this but didn't find an exact answer. When I installed my new Radian 65 in my Lexus ES300, outboard (because it's to loose in the middle) the headrest pushed the seat so forward that I could not get it tight. It is a very small sunken headrest which fits into the seat, only rising above it by about an inch. After removing it the seat fits solid when I test it from the side evenly but if I really work just the front of the seat side to side it will work loose and move about three or four inches and with all my strength I could probably tip it a bit to the side (10 degree angle or so before the tether would stop it). Also, with the headrest removed, I can reach the tether strap adjuster yet the seat still rests solid. I guess this is two questions:
#1 Is it ok to remove the headrest? The car seat is still supported with just a cut-out in the middle near the top of car seat. If it's not ok, I will be forced to use a booster since any tall seat is going to have the same problem.
#2 How can I get my seat tighter so the front is solid or should I not worry about that.
BTW, I've never used latch and they seemed like a PITA to me so I'm using the belt. He will be 48 pounds soon enough anyway. Sorry so long and THANK YOU!!

Check your vehicle's owner's manual, but you should be able to remove the headrest. The Radian does not require a headrest behind it and in this case sounds like it installs better without it.

To check for tightness, tug with one hand at the beltpath. The seat should move less than 1" in any direction (front to back or side to side).

LATCH and seatbelts are equally safe. Use whichever is easier for you. Just make sure you store the LATCH belts if you're not using them. Always use the top tether regardless of whether you are using the seatbelt or lower anchors.

Have you tried the recline mechanism at the bottom of the seat? That can firm things up a bit. Honestly if he's not close to 48 pounds, I'd use LATCH.
