I just received my new Radian 65 today. My son's shoulders are just at the second highest position, they may even be 1/4 higher than the slots. The next position is at the bottom of his ears! It's such a big jump! The lower ones all progress inch by inch and these last two are at least a few inches apart. What are we supposed to do while they are in between? When should I switch to the higher position? It seems like it would be way to high at this time. BTW, he is almost 43" tall. Thanks!!!

Was this in the house or installed?
Many times children fit differently in a seat on the floor vs. once its installed in the car. If you tried him in the house only, I would suggest installing the seat and then seeing where he is slot wise.
You are always supposed to use the slots above the shoulders for forward facing, so if he is still slightly above the second highest slot when the seat is installed, you will have to move them up.

I just checked it installed and it's about the same, even a little worse. The high slot is at his ears though, obviously far above his shoulders.

When in doubt, move them up. It seems like they are too high, but you want the harness to hold him BACK in a crash, if it's pushing DOWN, you risk spinal compression injuries. It's also a lot easier to put him in the harness if it's higher :)
