Consumer Reports evaluates tires a couple times a year. I'd also check their comments before a purchase. In addition, consumer websites like www.tirerack.com also have comparative information and reviews.
One interesting thing I read in Consumer Reports is how quickly most tires lose their snow and rain performance. This can be considerable even halfway through the tread life. CR also found some tires (like the Bridgestone Turanza and other models with Uni-T AQII compound) actually maintain their traction better as the tire wears. They use two compounds. The outer one has longer wear while the tread is still deep. The inner compound wears faster, but provides better traction in rain and snow to compensate for a tread that has worn already.
I've been very happy with the Turanza LS-H tires we put on our Subaru Outback. I'll probably put Turanza LS-T tires on our Odyssey before winter.

Thank you :) For some reason my Google search wasn't coming up with anything really helpful....
