Thank you, everyone, for your replies and your helpful info! I have a follow-up question about Darren's post. Thank you for your info on "getting stuck" and your explanations of how AWD and traction control work. In terms of safety, i.e. accident avoidance, would you say that AWD offers any advantage over just the traction control? Or is it just relevant to getting stuck in the snow? I am mostly concerned about not losing control on icy roads, of which we have plenty around here.

I don't think really anything will help on ice...nothing can "grab" onto ice, not 2 wheels or 4.

AWD and traction control are about grip in wet, icy or slippery conditions. The only safety advantage would be for the rare event of not being stuck in a remote place.

For handling and crash avoidance, Vehicle Stabilty Control is the feature you want. It can paired with FWD, RWD or AWD vehicles.

Quality winter snow tires can get a grip on slick ice, and snow chains can dig into the ice for traction. These are often required on mountain passes and snowy roads, especially in western states.
