can't install Radian: tether slack :(

I need help installing this Radian car seat. I am leaving on a road trip in a couple of hours and am feeling very frustrated. The top tether is not tight enough, even when tightened all the way. Is there a trick to getting it tighter? My car is an 89 Volvo 240 wagon and I am installing in the middle position of the back seat, forward facing. I posted earlier but my message didn't come up. I am fairly desperate. thanks if anyone can help...

Hopefully this isn't too late--I don't have experience with your vehicle, but it might comfort you to know that the Radian performs exceptionally well even without the top tether; the tether is an additional measure of security, but it's not a necessity.
