View Full Version : Rockem sockem seats: Regent vs. Bolevard

This decision is confounding me, can anyone help?
The facts:
*I have a son, 29 pounds, about 36 inches, just turned 3 this week.
*I have a 2004 subaru forester, latch.
*We own a wizard, and a regent, still waiting for the "enhancement " kit
to use long belt path w/ latch. Currently using short belt path w/latch.
*We had an accident in a 92 mercury sable, our second car, no latch, with the wizard in back center: no airbags deployed, car drove away, but hubby broke bone in hand and back window was broken, back door needed to be replaced, plus some other panels.
*Got 200 bucks from the insurance; but Britax said the wizard was
probably still ok to use. I know about the 7 criteria for a "major" accident; Britax said that since the damaged door and window werent right next to the seat(center) it might not count as a major crash criteria. I forget what they said about my husband's hand as a criteria.
*We are about to leave on a long road trip in the subaru forester, and need to buy a new seat, or use the regent or wizard.

My questions;
*Would anyone here still use the wizard? I've decided not to but would like to know opinions.
*Should I leave for the trip with the "safe" but not enhanced Regent,
short belt path no recline bar?
*Should I get a new regent (we need 2 seats anyhow, if the wizard is no
go)or will that pesky recline bar, required with the new one, always be a lousy fit? I could never get a good install in the forester with it.
*Should I get a new boulevard, knowing he'll be out of it in a year or
so? I sat him in one today, and he had 3-4 inches before the highest
belt position (I just wound the dial up until it stopped)then i'd have
to get a second regent at that point. It also looks odd to me with the side impact wings raised way up high above the seat, but I guess it's OK as long as the childs ears are not above the top of the seat...
*Should I get a cheaper marathon, to buy time before buying our next regent or other seat, without spending the full blvd price since it may not fit him for long? Were leaving next week so the best deal I can get in a hurry is Target, opening up a charge to get 10 percent off the Marathon. Just how important is that side impact stuff on the BLVD anyhow?
* As if this weren't enough, what do you think of this: I have a factory installed dog gate in the forester, and am continuing to use the top tether through it. We dont have a dog but it seems to me that the gate would keep luggage from flying around, and the tether doesnt look compromised to me, although I know you arent supposed to use it with the gate.

and N.B., does this site have a relationship to carseatdata.org? I was trying to sign in before I realized I had the wrong site and thought my membership had been erased.....so I "re" joined (I thought ) and then wondered why responses were so much sparser. Then I figured out i had the wrong site. Ooops.

Thanks so much everyone,
Abby

I'll try to cover what I can quickly here.

No, I wouldn't use the Wizard - vehicle damage in adjacent door and dh's hand being injured, I'd just err on the side of caution.

It sounds like the Boulevard is likely to last your son a couple more years if you have a few inches left to raise the harness. They say 1" of torso is usually 2 to 3" of height overall.

Some really like the side impact protection of BLVD and will only buy seats that have TSIP. I'd be fine with getting a MA, and just switching seats if you're going on a long road trip in a vehicle with poor side impact protection. The MA would also give you a little more harness height room than a BLVD would.

No advice about getting a new regent - do you have a store nearby that you can try one out at? This is probably your best choice financially in the long run, but if you can't install it with the recline bar, then that could be a problem.

As for using your current regent in the other car, personally I'd be fine using the install instructions that came with the seat - although I would try and see if I could install it with the enhanced instructions first.

Sorry, I need my coffee so I'm being lazy :o Ditto to everything above -- I would not use a carseat that was in a crash with any damage needing repair, especially not if the carseat was occupied.... I would also definitely try to install the Regent as per the enhanced instructions, but for a child that size I would also feel fine continuing to use it as per the original instructions if you cannot achieve the new method.... I might actually be a bit more frugal: I'd probably just get an Uptown or Triumph Advance (turning kiddo RF again) to save towards a 2nd Regent rather than get a Marathon.

www.carseatdata.org is separate from www.car-safety.org/www.car-seat.org ;) This forum is much more active!

Is your son currently rear facing? Rear facing to 33 lbs or 35 lbs is safest. When are you leaving on your trip? I can send my kit from Britax if you'd like, then you can send me your kit when you get it? I was able to follow the new instructions with nothing needed from the new kit.

Thankyou so much, everyone. OK now I'm seriously thinking of putting the regent aside and doing a marathon or blvd RF. The thing is, he might really complain, or get carsick riding backwards,
but I could really try to sell it. He comes up different weights, evrywhere from 28-30 pounds, I wonder just how dangerous is it to push the RF limits, given the differences between scales etc. its 33 pounds for the Marathon I think? I need to look it up. I know the forester has good SIP but I dont know if its for back seat w/no airbags. I was thinking if I did the marathon he would have a better view(no side wings), which might help sell the RF, but in the forester he has to be outboard, not center, so he is near to the side, maybe I should do the BLVD with side wings. hmmmm. And thankyou so much for the offer of fronting me that kit. Now I'm thinking of RF so it might not be an issue. Thanks everyone,
Abby
