View Full Version : Which one to tether?

I am only able to tether 1 of my FF seats right now, so I'm wondering which one would be better tethered. X, 5 1/2 yrs old, 42 lbs, is in a BV and R, 4 yrs, 36 lbs, is in a Radian. They are both in center seating positions in my van. The spot with the tether anchor has a lap/shoulder belt and the spot without a tether anchor is a lap-only belt. I was originally thinking to put X in the position with the tether because he is bigger and has a very large head ;) and I've always been concerned about head excursion with his big head. But, just the other day, I wondered if R would be better tethered since she is younger and her spine is probably not as strong as X's. So I should switch them right? Or should I leave the Radian for R in the spot without the tether since we know it performs well without it? I can just barely get a good install with the Radian in the spot without the tether (the lap-only belt). I have to twist the buckle stalk 3 times and the seat moves less than 1", but it's not as solid as it is in the position with the tether and the lap-shoulder belt. The BV can go in either position rock solid.

Another question that is (kind of) related: What do you think is better? FF center not-tethered or FF outboard tethered?

TIA for your input! :D

I would tether the BV since the child in this seat is bigger, weighs more and we know that the Radian performs well without the top tether so if I had to not tether one seat I would not tether the Radian.

As for your last question I would feel more comfortable with the seat outboard and tethered as it helps prevent some of the head excursion in a collision.

What about using a seat belt from the back seat as a tether? Is it allowed in your vehicle?

Good. Thanks. That's what I was thinking, too, so I'll leave them where they are! I just wanted to make sure I was right!

But both seats are in the centre seats . . . unless you put the one outboard in the untethered location and would be able to tether to the seat behind it if it were empty which I would guess it isn't as you have 3 of your own and babysit others

Yes, but it doesn't help because it is the back row that is lacking tether anchors. The middle row has them in both positions already.
