We have a 1992 Camry that the kids rarely ride in, but we have frequently enough plopped a carseat in the middle position by using the lapbelt--there is no LATCH. Problem is, now we have two kids. And for the first time this week there seemed a need to have them both ride in the Camry, but heck if DH or I could figure out how to put the carseats in the outboard position--where there are shoulder belts, but no LATCH. So we didn't.

We have a new Snugride and a 2004 Triumph (FF). Any suggestions--other than buying a new car?

Try pulling the shoulderbelts all the way out and letting them slowing feed back in part of the way, then try pulling again. If you can't pull more webbing freely, that means it's locked at the retractor. My guess is that yours don't lock like that, my guess is you'll need a locking clip to safely install seats in that vehicle.

This page should help: http://www.carseatsite.com/lockingclips.htm
