View Full Version : Estimating RF recline angles... novel method

this issue comes up from time to time. there are ways of estimating recline angle, a common one being to hold a piece of paper horizontally with your car on level ground, and just eyeballing the recline angle of the seat.
what i've been playing around with lately is something that seems to give reliable numbers. i take a picture of a carseat and open it in my CAD (computer-aided-design) software. then i draw a line along the side of the shell. the software spits back the angle of the line.
for this to work optimally, the pictures should be at or near a perfect straight-on profile shot of the carseat, shot at the same height as the carseat from an open rear passenger door, with the camera and car both level. the scale or size of the pic is not important.
i did this the other day for someone here, and used two photos taken from either side of the carseat. the pics weren't perfect, and the software still spit out numbers for each pic that were within 2 degrees of each other, so i think the method is pretty reliable, and probably near perfect if the pics are straight and level.
if anyone wants to get an estimate of their recline angle this way, just post a pic (or two or three, the more the better) here in this thread and i will post back with a picture of the line drawn through the seat and the calculated angle.

last pic not used because it wasn't level. first two pics were really good. each one was within 2 degrees of the other. on average, you have about a 38.3 degree recline. :)

Oh, is it that reclined???
Somebody remind me? Is 45 the max and 30 the min?? So that would make me somewhere in the middle?
Wow, tha means you could really be upright!
Thanks, southpawboston. :) That is so cool!
I had been wondering if it was too upright but it is not even close.

After seeing the other RF pics I think mine is REALLY reclined. The sad thing is I went to the seatcheck website and I went to the local state police dept. and the man listed on the seatcheck site is the one who inspected the install and said it was perfect :(
Sorry for the ramble. My son is 8 months old, about 23 pounds and 29-30 inches. Here are the pics. I'm so sorry they are HUGE :o

mamiof3, i just did the first pic since it seemed the most level. if you look at the left side door window line, it appears as the the pic may be slightly angled to the right. if that's true, than you could subtract about 1-2 degrees from the measurement i got.

oh, and a comment about comparing different methods: that's a good idea. it's always good to compare data from different methods, and see how close each method gets to the next. no one method is perfect, and sometimes it's good to get averages from different methods.

I'm posting pics as soon as DD goes down for her nap. I have a feeling that her MA is reclined too much as well.
ETA: Here are the pictures. I *know* that it's reclined too much, now that I'm looking at it. Also, please tell me (although I know you all will anyway) if anything else is wonky.

Also, I tried my hardest to get the camera as lined up as possible. I live on a hill, so I was basically tilting the camera so that the seat lined up. If it's not enough, I can re-take them, just let me know.

I just finished installing dd's carseat today after getting some tether advice, and I was wondering if you could do my pics too? I'm not sure it it's too relined. It doesn't seem that way when she's in there, but I fiigured I'd find out. I took two pictures. I would have tried to maybe get better ones, but it's raining out. I didn't resize them because I wasn't sure how big you want them. Here they are(I'm not sure if you'll be able to click on them because I haven't figured out how to do that on this site yet):

This seat is reclined too much - it should be no more than 45 degrees, and more upright is preferred for an older baby.
Also, I can't tell... is it not sitting fully on the base? It looks like, near the seat bight, that it is off the seat a little bit... is that just me seeing something? The base should be sitting fully on the seat.

Yeah, DH installed it, which is why I knew it was reclined too much (I want it way higher). I really didn't think it was that off though - yikes. Good thing we haven't been out in the past few days (since it's been re-installed). It's not off the seat; I thought the same thing when I saw the pics on the camera - the fabric of the seat is a darker gray; it's basically an optical illusion.
Thanks again for doing the angles for me. I'll post some more after I re-install to make sure it's better.

I've worked with those from time to time, they can be a bit tricky IMO. If you don't measure from the right place the angle can be wrong. The 45* angle is (according to my instructors) for the child's head, not the seat shell. So the device goes inseat the seat of the CR.
Too confusing....
It like the angle thingy. Thinking of buying it! teehee

This should have been in the Carseat Safety area so I could give it a 5 star rating :) System won't let me give you any points since I gave you some about the driver's manual/highway thread  At least not till I give someone else points & I'm getting the same restriction for almost everyone (apparently I keep giving the same people points without noticing: at least that means I'm judging by content rather than popularity)

skaterbabs brings up a good point about where to measure the recline angle... the backside of a carseat is very variable, sometimes curvy, and rarely flat, so judging the placement of the arbitrary straight line for angle calculcation is kind of a fuzzy science to begin with. for the britaxes, i am using the crease that runs along the side of the shell, which *seems* to approximate the torso angle, but whether or not it reflects the angle of the child's head/neck, i really don't know. it really is just an estimate, but at least it's one step closer to quantitative than holding a piece of paper.

your angle tool measurements on your flickr site were hard for me to read; how do these numbers compare? both of these photos seem to be off-center (taken a little too far to the left of the seat), so i'm not sure how accurate these numbers are:

Thanks! I thought it was a lot better (the top of the seat isn't between the front seats now). I normally have it more reclined, but I thought DD would like it more upright. That's all good, right? (Oh, and I know my tether wasn't connected in the picture, I took them mid-install).

I'm interested in seeing what you come up with. Since she was so upright in the Corolla to allow for a front passenger, every time I look at it in the Camry it looks so reclined to me.
Can you use this one? It might need to be rotated to level. This is when we first got the Camry.

well i didn't rotate the pics at all because you stated the pics were level. but looking back again at the two pics, it appears that the first pic is in fact not level, and tilted in the direction of recline. i can see this by looking at the angle of the rear side window. if i go back and flip the first picture and then rotate it so that the window is at the same angle as the second picture, this is what i get:
you can see the green line i drew which shows the window angle being the same in both pics *after* rotating the first pic (you can see by the difference in recline angle before and after rotating the pic, that the pic had to be rotated about 3 degrees).

here are the results for all three of you, in one combined pic.
momof2kiddos, i rotated the second pic of yours because it didn't appear level compared with the first one, and the last pic of the cowmooflage seat wasn't useable because of the camera angle (too high).

snowbird, unfortunately yours is hard to estimate because i can't tell from the profile of your infant seat where the child's back rests along the seat. the side wings are in the way (the britaxes have a nice visible ridge along the side that runs roughly parallel with the child's back). i drew three lines for you. you can take a close look at your seat and try to match up the best line with the way your child actually sits in the seat. maybe if you lift the handle you can see some sort of ridge that runs along the seat that i can go by?

I just went to take pics of our safeseat for this but I'm not sure it's going to work. There is a ridge on the outside of the seat but it doesn't match up with where the baby's back would be in the seat. If it did then in these pics it would seem like the baby is laying almost flat, and that definately would not be the case. I'm not sure if you can do anything with them, but I moved the handle and canopy out of the way just in case. Well, I do have 2 pics, but my camera batteries just died so I'll have to recharge them before I can get the other one uploaded and resized. This is the one that is even with the car, the other is with the bottom of the seat level. I wasn't sure which needed to be level for this to work!

If his head fell forward as opposed to towards the side, then it's too upright for him at any rate so I'd recline it a bit more regardless of what the actual angle # is.

I'm not a tech and I am not sure really, but isn't reclining past 45* dangerous? So if it is more reclined than that I would think having the child's head propped with towels or something to keep it positioned would be a better option? Someone who knows more should take this one, maybe it got lost in all the pics though...

techs make mistakes too. the tech who seatchecked our seat years ago installed our evenflo triumph in our elantra in the center position using borrowed outbard LATCH (not allowed by hyundai OR evenflo). he also told us that the top tether was optional. two MAJOR mistakes.

yes, 45 deg is the limit because more reclined than that and the child will have a tendency to slide toward the front of the car in a frontal crash, riding up on the shoulder section of the harness. at less recline angle, the child will just get pushed into the shell of the CRS, and crash forces are broadly distributed across the upper torso.
to keep the child's head form bobbing, you can use rolled up towels on the sides of the child's head to try to support it, as long as you are not placing the towels behind the head or between the child and any part of the harness.

Iluvbabies57, would you mind some other critiquing?
I'll be interested in seeing what his numbers come up as, because it does look to me to be too reclined (maybe borderline for an infant, but I wouldn't have it that far back for a toddler)
Also, how are you locking your seat? I see you are using a seatbelt with a sliding latchplate. Is it a switchable (ratcheting retractor)?? I see you are passing over the locking clip, so just wondering how you're locking it :)
Also, it doesn't look very tight. Does it move less than an inch when you grab it and shake it?
It also looks like the top tether is pretty loose. It doesn't have to be rock solid tight, but the slack does need to be removed, and it looks like it might still have a little slack in it.
I can't see what you have it tethered to, but just remember that it needs to be something that's bolted to the floor and can't move (so not to a seat that adjusts or a sliding bar etc)
And, you really should store the latch hooks in their pockets (under the cover) because in a crash, they could go flying around loose and strike your baby or someone else.
Sorry if all my questions are way off base, so I could be totally wrong on everything. There are so many things you can't tell just by looking at a picture, so I just want to make sure :) Hope you're not offended :o

I can't answer the question, but we're seeing the side nearest the buckle, so if she's using the lock-off, it'd be the one on the other side of the seat anyways and she would just be threading over top of the lock-off that we're seeing. ;) (Britax does ok using either lock-off or both when you talk to them, but the manual says to use the lock-off on the opposite side of the buckle, so in most cases that's what people will use if using the lock-offs.)
Nope, no offense taken!
Yes, it was very tight, and I was using the lock off on the other side. The tether is really tight, I used it to recline the seat more than it was when I first installed it. I see what you mean about it looking like it has slack in it... I wonder if its from the little creases in the tether where the clip normally is? IDK. But it was tight! And it was tethered to the drivers side seat track (actually, this pic is from the passenger side, but its the same on the drivers side. I think I took this when I first got the seat)
http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j119/Iluvbabies57/IMG_0721.jpg
And...Its not being used for a kid;). I just wanted to see if I could get 45 degrees in my little car (nissan sentra). I did the folded paper test thing, and it looked level but I wanted real numbers! lol. I have a few friends with infants, so I kind of also wanted to do it JIC I had to take them somewhere and for some reason didn't have their bucket seat (this seemed to happen frequently when their older kids were little! so I wanted to be prepared)
Oh, the LATCH anchors are normally in use (my dd is ff outboard, she's 3). I didn't feel like putting them away cause I was just playing with the seat.
Again, no offense taken! Better safe than sorry!

Oh OK! That explains it :)
I had wondered if you were using the other lock off (or somthing else), that's why I asked! In the manual I just read it says "close the lock off closest to you", but I've heard that Britax has said all kinds of things about which lockoff to use
I'm glad you didn't mind me double checking with things you didn't even ask about :) I remember long ago, when I first started posting here, I posted pictures of my snugride base install angle, and someone noticed that there was a folddown armrest where it was installed. Even though I was just asking about the angle, they cared enough to let me know I might want to make sure my vehicle manual said that was Ok (it was).
Anyway, I was really impressed that they cared enough to go over the rest of my install and point it out to me, so I try to do the same for others when I notice something that might be questionable (since we can't be there in person to see for sure)
:)
Nope, don't mind at all! In fact, I try and do the same though you wouldn't know it here. I'm a regular over at babycenter's carseat board where I post a LOT more often than I do here! :)
Anyways, yeah I'm glad you said something. If I hadn't known, I would have been very thankful that someone pointed it out to me!

I thought that it had to be between 45 and 35? Is it 30? My DD is really more comfortable that way. She has nose trouble and wants to see what is going on outside that car and this helps. She very rarely sleeps in the car and when she does her head doesn't flop. So in that case is she fine?

by the time both of our DDs switched form infant seats to RFing convertibles, they were holding their heads up just fine, so we always had the angles close to 30 degrees.

Thanks! Is that too much of a recline? I mean, I know the minimum is 30, right, but is it too close? Should I recline it more? (my dd is 16 mos.. if that makes a difference). Does having it more upright cause it to possibly rebound more in an accident?
Thanks.

veggiegirl, the triumphs are really hard to estimate because they have a really rounded shell. i usually rely on a straight line on the side of the shell against which i measure the angle. so it's just guestimating when you don't have a straight line that rougly corresponds with the torso support section of the carseat. if i try to imagine where the torso runs on the EFTA i get about 38 degrees.

No, it's really ok, you'll just get more sideways headflop when sleeping :) (upright is safer than reclined, because it spreads the forces out evenly all along the back, if it's reclined too much, the forces go into the shoulders a lot worse...either way it'll rebound, and that's only related to extremely minor injuries...the same kind kids get when learning to walk that often go undiagnosed...'orbital fractures'). So you're good :)

36.5 for the FFing MA, and 34.0 for the RFing radian. this is assuming that your pic is straight (i used the last one). does the window's bottom age naturally slope like that or is it supposed to be horizontal? if the picture is crooked and needs to be rotated to the left, then the numbers would be recalibrated to 39.2 for the FFing MA and 30.3 for the RFing radian.

What kind of recline should a RF seat be for a 10 month old? Right now I have DD's EFTA installed with the standard recline on it but I'm not sure if thats enough of a recline. I can try to take pictures if needed.

Thanks!
Is either of these better (there is a building in the back that can help with straight!)

i'm getting 37.6 for the MA in the car and 44.9 in the truck (the truck pic was very crooked and i had to rotate it to the left to make the side window look level).
Thanks!!
I will try & get the recline in the truck higher, it was hard in there :(
ETA: this looks straighter

i'm getting 43.63 degrees, but the BV is different. it has that bulky head pillow that pushes the head forward, so the child isn't as reclined as much as in a MA installed the same way.

Let's see if I can post pictures here...never tried it before. Had a heck of a time getting the driver's side photos to show the seat.
This is my MA for an almost 7mo old (excellent head control) and about 19 lb:

Thank you! I was having the hardest time getting the seat in so it wasn't leaning to one side. Guess I can pull harder on one side than the other.
Yup, I'm in SoCal! South Orange County (live in Mission Viejo and work in Dana Point).

It has LATCH still in the FF belt path because I was just flipping it around to see how well it would install with the seatbelt. It was moved right back around and installed with LATCH FF. After removing the RF prop of course!
(if anyone sees anything wrong with my installs, please speak up  )

DD is 10 months old, I have her EFTA in the rfing position and the arrow is level with the ground, but it seems a little upright to me, but maybe i'm just still used to her snugride

i'm going to estimate 38.5, only because it's hard to see where the torso line runs on the EFTA because it has a very rounded shell. it's much more of a guesstimate than with other seats.

Thanks! That sound be enough of a recline for a 10 month old right? I had to take out the head pillow because her head would slump forward when she fell asleep but now she doesn't seem to have that problem.

Hey SPB, I switched Mick to the BV and we are having head slump issues. I think I have it as reclined the full 45* (eek--if not more), but my eyes maybe lying to me and if I can recline it more I want to.
What do you think?

Could you check this please? I have no clue if it's anywhere near ok, I'm extremely bad at estimating. Obviously it's not at 45 degrees, but how vertical is it, exactly? Thanks!
ETA: The level on the car seat is level. The car seems to have no un-sloped lines...
