Nurses giving out bad info...

My very good friend just had identical twin boys last week and she has told me what the nurses were telling her regarding car seat info and it really bothers me! First, they told her to FF at 20 lbs/1 yr, and she argued with them about that and told them that techs are now recommending longer than that (good for her, I've taught her well!) Then, when she went for their well baby check just the other day, the nurse told her that she heard a rumor recently that the straps don't actually have to be that tight anymore. Ummm... helllo! Anyone else heard of this rumor? They actually have a tech on staff there, too... ughhh... Makes me think I don't want to take one of the classes here if they're still not pushing for extended RF. The looser straps thing, just :jaw:
I wish they wouldn't talk about car seat stuff like they know what they're doing... most parents would just listen to them and not think twice!

yea, the straps issue seems like common sense to me :thumbsdown:

alot of nurses are just trying to help, and dont realise that they are doing more harm than good. its quite frustrating :(

Actually, I heard a rumor that you don't even need to buckle them in anymore, period. Apparently all car seat manufacturers are now required to implement force field technology in all seats manufactured after 10-1-05, so that even if the child isn't buckled, it doesn't matter. Starting 2-15-08, they will also be required to start using molecular bonding so that if the car seat is in any one place for more than 10 minutes (after it has been removed from the box and its molecules activated), it bonds to the surface of that and can only be removed by calling a 1-900 number and punching in a sequence of numbers on a keypad (located on the base of the car seat) to release the bond. That way, parents don't have to worry about securing the seat to the vehicle anymore.
This is in response to parents complaining that LATCH is too complicated and it takes too much time to buckle in children. My ARNP backed it all up. Apparently Britax is actually already using the molecular bonding on the Decathlon, which accounts for all the harness problems. They're still working out the kinks, but it should be perfected in time for the Diplomat.
Fascinating stuff, really.

This is not actually true. I really REALLY hope you know that. And not a general you, but YOU. You right there, reading this. You still have to secure the seat to your vehicle with less than one inch of movement at the belt path and you still have to tighten the straps as much as possible, leaving no slack. And for goodness sake, ENOUGH with the belly clips!
