the little boy i nanny for is in a ff 5 pt harness seat. he sits behind the passenger seat in a 4 door truck. He likes looking out the windows and pointing things out he sees on the road, so I was wondering if it is safe/unsafe to take off the detachable headrest of the front passenger seat? I dont want to do it if its a potential safety hazard! if you know, thanks in advance for your input!! :)

What is the vehicle year, make, model?

Is the child in the rear center position or outboard directly behind the front passenger seat?

Is the carseat top-tethered?

Does anyone ever ride in the front passenger seat? If so, then it's a major hazard to that person not to have a headrest. If not, then I can't think of any safety issues. I suppose that there might be an increased danger of being hit by glass in the event of a crash involving the windshield, but that might be balanced by having less to impact in such a crash.

It would be essential to have the headrest stored safely so that it can't become a projectile in a crash. But you also need to have it handy in case anyone ever *does* ride in the front passenger seat.

an answer to your questions:

its an 05 toyota tacoma, and he is BEHIND the passenger.. i would only take it off during the week when there is no front seat passener, (that would be uncomfortable to have no head rest if someone was sitting there anyway!) it is top tethered.

thanks :)
